AKKA is about taking care of the ball and being a good teammate... AKKA (ah-kuh) wants to bring the independently creative free play from the street and marry it with the beauty and structure of organized, traditional outdoor soccer. AKKA is a representation of the love and joy that a player holds in their heart every time they kick the ball, it is a way to express the elation and freedom found in the game, as an individual and within the framework of a team.
For John Jenks and Paul Tanimae, the recent shift in the game to becoming over organized and less inclusive is the catalyst that sparked AKKA’s inception in the winter of 2008. They both grew up playing soccer in the halcyon days of the late 70’s and 80’s where the game was less organized by adults, and kids had more time in general to just play.
AKKA is inclusive because we believe the game belongs to the players regardless of whatever labels they have assumed or been forced to wear. AKKA allows all players to ascend to what ever level of competition they want to find in the game. AKKA players play with forethought, creativity, courage, a joyful spirit and when brought together as a team, they play the game for each other resulting in fluid, attacking, and exciting soccer!
