Technical
Ball management: Ability to keep ball under pressure of opponents.
Passing: Working on using all surfaces of both feet.
Receiving: Improve ability to receive ball in a variety of scenarios; ground/air, and to secure or move the ball w/1st touch.
Shooting/Finishing: Practice with both feet and all surfaces to increase confidence and probability of scoring more goals, including using head for players 6th grade and up.
Running with the Ball: Work on carrying the ball with close control, changing speeds, turning, off-balancing defenders, and breaking down defenders 1v1.
Tactical
It’s our strong belief but not original belief that soccer is a game played between the ears first, meaning sound decision making on and off the ball. We want to help players recognize space, opportunities, assess risk, all with a positive mindset to pass forward, play forward, until you can’t, and be able to recognize problems in advance that can be solved with heads up awareness before they become real problems. We will help players develop better decisions through creating game situations where pressure is introduced passively and increased to fully active. We will help players develop a mental hierarchy based on a simple question; “Can I score?”, when the answer is “No”, then the next question is “Who can, and how can I get them the ball?”. From this simple approach a player will develop a logic tree that will help them automate decisions more quickly and always look to play positively in attack.
Mental/Physical
These topics are two sides of the same coin and the demands of each session will require players to devote energy towards them. Most importantly however at these ages of 3rd-8th grades is the technical acquisition and improved decision making. As they enter hs and their bodies are growing rapidly, they will be more ready to receive the benefits of some specialized athletic training specific to soccer, in the meantime however we want to help them develop an improved feel, intuition, understanding, and the ability to positively impact the game on and off the ball.
